TripAdvisor review from Drew G - I’ve been on a few ghost tours in other cities but this is the first one where the guide (Morganne) showed some unique photos of possible paranormal activity. When we got to the Tolamato cemetery we both felt a presence. Great history and tour. Suggested taking pictures in 3s to compare and we think we captured some unique images. 10/10 would recommend had a great time! Walked past the Tolamato on the way home by ourselves and felt the energy really strong again. Great time! ********************************************************* Thanks for the great review Drew! You bring up a great point about taking photos. Definitely take pictures in sets of 3’s It is easier to distinguish if you have captured something paranormal. Each Friday in October we’d like to feature a different “Ghost Host”. We will start the month off with the lovely and effervescent Morganne Pratten. 👻👻👻👻👻👻👻 MORGANNE PRATTEN As one of the original ghost hosts and the “face” on our signage, Morganne is basically a true local celebrity! She loves giving ghost tours and has been doing so since she was in high school! She has worked with paranormal investigation teams such as Ripley's Ghost Train, plus Ghosts and Gravestones. She truly loves what she does and continues to be amazed at paranormal phenomena. Morganne has had many personal experiences with the paranormal and loves to share them with her guests. Being a mother of three boys, three years and under, there isn't much that can scare this Mama. However, she will be the first to tell you she absolutely believes in spirit and agrees we can communicate with them. "I love seeing the guests' face when you tell them you believe they have actually witnessed something paranormal. Well, I think I would anyway, most of the time I've already made it a block away with my skirts kicked up and my feet in full gear." (She is known for her infectious sense of humor.) During his lifetime Genopoly had three wives, who lived and died in the house, There is also note of a little girls tragic death in the house. The structure was later used as a tearoom, a retail shop and finally a photography studio, before it was opened as a tourist attraction and museum in the 1930’s. Our guests have been capturing lots of activity on our tours. These photos are from Jan’s tour this past Saturday night. The photographer is 9 year old Sebastian, who was on the tour with his family. He is what he and his family shared about the photos... “...We were at the Tolomato Cemetery talking about James. Sebastian said he saw someone - a black shadow figure standing behind one of the benches in the cemetery. He took the photos and then reviewed them at home. He realized that he also captured a little girl - could be ”the woman in white” who is known to roam the grounds.” (First photo is the original photo. CONTEST ANNOUNEMENT! ENTER TO WIN! NATIONAL GRANDPARENTS DAY is celebrated the first Sunday after Labor Day. This year the date falls on SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 13, 2020. We here are Ancient City Tours and A Ghostly Encounter are passionate about sharing history and wanted to share how this special day came to be. In the year 1969 a letter was sent to President Nixon from a 9-year old Russel Capper asking the President to designate a day to celebrate grandparents. He received the following letter back from the White House. “Dear Russell, Thank you for your letter to President Nixon. Your suggestion regarding a Grandparent’s Day is appreciated, but the President ordinarily issues proclamations designating periods for special observance only when a Congressional resolution authorizes him to do so. With best wishes, Sincerely, Rose Mary Woods Personal Secretary to the President.” Young Russel never pursued any further action. The concept sat dormant until the late 70’s when Marian McQuade pushed the idea through the US Senate with the help of Senator Randolph. Ms. McQuade’s goal was to educate youth about the importance of seniors and their impact on our history. She encouraged “adopting” a grandparent to educate the children about their adopted grandparents lives, challenges and dreams. A joint resolution was introduced to the senate in 1977 requesting President Jimmy Carter to “Issue annually a proclamation designating the first Sunday of September after Labor Day of each year as National Grandparents Day.“ The proclamation was signed in 1978 and the first celebration was in 1979. INTERESTING FACTS: OFFICIAL SONG: There is an official song for National Grandparents Day: “A Song for Grandma and Grandpa” by Johnny Prill. OFFICIAL FLOWER: Forget-Me-Nots NATIONAL HOLIDAY: It’s was signed into existence as a National Holiday, but is celebrated as an observance. MAIL: On average over 4 million cards are sent out for National Grandparents Day. HIGHEST VISITATION DAY: This is the single highest day of nursing home visits. *************************** HERE’S THE CONTEST - *************************** IT’S YOUR TURN TO TELL US A STORY! We want YOU to tell us about your grandparents! Tell us about your “Nana”, “Mimi”, “Pop-Pop”, “O-pa”, “Ya-Ya”, “Abuello”, “gramps”...”gammie”... you know who we are talking about! (adding 1-2 photos is optional, but encouraged), and then tell us why he/she/they are so special to you. This can be an “adopted” grandparent too. Once you make your post, invite your friends and family to “LIKE” or “HEART” your post. PRIZE: The submission with the most LIKES/HEARTS on Facebook, will win a family 6-pack of tickets good for use on a private history walking tour with Ancient City Tours or for use on a scheduled ghost tour with A Ghostly Encounter (October 29-31, 2020 dates are blacked out) RULES: - All photos/and write-ups must be posted below as part fo THIS THREAD. - Submissions will be accepted through midnight on Saturday, September 12, 2020 (EDST) - The winner will be announced on Facebook by 12noon (EDST) Sunday, September 13, 2020. Can you see the orb in each? The 3rd image is a crop/composite of the orb and shows it in different locations in each photo. Ms. Patel did an awesome job of not only seeing the orb on her phone screen but taking multiple shots. Reflections and stay light typically would not move in a series of shots. The chance of this being a true paranormal photograph...99% YES! ... See more

A couple of photos shared from last night's 9:00 pm tour. 2 families from many states apart, all coming together to have their own Ghostly Encounter. One little girl was sure she was communicating with "Elizabeth" from the city gates. Another a teen waited till everyone else had left and came up in tears...The dowsing rods allowed her to communicate with her grandfather and she was very grateful for the opportunity. Alfred is just finishing up his one week stay at the #SaintFrancisInn and holy smokes does he have a story to tell. Quoting from their website: "St Francis Inn is on the National Register of Historic Places. Dating from 1791, it is unquestionably St. Augustine’s “oldest inn.” With that title comes a rich history and some very active spirits. Many people have claimed to have the bed sheets pulled off of them in the middle of the night. Others say things will move around their room on their own. Furniture slides across the floor, that eerie feeling that you're being watched is somewhat normal in this building. It all started with a young couple in love. He, a well known, white military officer and she, an African american woman working as a maid in his household. It wasn't long before the two fell in love. However, at this time an interracial couple was strongly forbidden. They chose to keep their relationship a secret, meeting in the attic regularly to spend time together and profess their love for one another. They would leave cryptic notes to each other in a secret hiding place only they would know the exact location. Each day, they would exchange notes. One day, the officer went out to where their secret spot was and found no note waiting for him. Disappointed as he was, he assumed his beautiful lover became too busy with work and simply didn't have time to write him a note. Never would he accuse her of any negligence or ill-will. He brushed it off and went about his day. It wasn't until three days later he knew something was wrong. Never in the history of their relationship had they gone this long without communication. He thought maybe, just maybe, she would be waiting for him in the attic. He races up the stairs and into the attic. To his horror he sees his lover, Lily, hanging from the rafters. She had hung herself, unable to cope with the pressures and secrecy any longer. Within the hour, the officer, heartbroken, very carefully takes down the deceased body of his lover, lays her on the floor, lovingly covers her with a white sheet, and hangs himself with the same rope. He could not bear the thought of living without her. To this day, you can stay is "Lily's Room" as the upstairs attic has been converted to a guest room. Although fair warning, paranormal investigators have rented the room for quite some time and usually, even if there are vacancies in the beautiful bed and breakfast, Lily's Room is booked for weeks in advance. ... Part Two of #TheAlcazarHotel: Did you know the #AlcazarHotel and the #CasaMonica used to be connected? Alfred told me of a woman in the Alcazar one night, draped in period dress; a white hoop skirt with blue lace ruffle detail. She was wandering the hallways, but when a man saw her and tried to make contact, she was nowhere to be found, an icy cold mist in her place. Fast forward a decade- 2010. A woman goes on a ghost tour at #aghostlyencounter and learns of this woman- she let's out a scream. When the guide asks about it she says "We're staying at the Casa Monica, and we have a portrait of that woman hanging in our bathroom! Strange things have been happening our whole stay, we just thought it was an old building." Is it possible this woman is from the exact time period when the two buildings were connected and continues to roam the hallways she believes are still there? Many spirits seem to "walk through walls", when in fact they are just walking through the passageways or doorways that were there when they were alive. They are in their own time; their own dimension if you will. (This actually happened to one of our guides here a few years ago, it still makes the hair on the back of our neck stand up!) 👻 ... Part 2 of #ThePoncedeLeonHotel: Henry Flagler unfortunately died down in Key West, but his body was brought to Saint Augustine and laid in state in the rotunda of his hotel so that all of his guests could say their farewells. As some of Mr.Flagler's last wishes, he wanted all of the windows and doors of the building to be left open during the ceremony so that his spirit could roam freely throughout the building. The day of his service came; flowers, offerings and loved ones filled the rotunda to wish Mr.Flagler a peaceful goodbye. If you've ever been to Florida before, you can almost set your watch to the rain storms in the summer time. Every day around 2pm it begins to rain, and this day was no different. Now because of Mr.Flagler's last wishes, all of the windows and doors were open during this sudden rainstorm and someone took it upon themselves to protect the hand carved mahogany details and closed them. This apparently did not make Mr.Flagler very happy. A minister actually claimed that he saw a black mist rise from that coffin, go around that rotunda as if there was no place to go, and go smack down into the floor. Upon further investigation of the spot on the floor, someone noticed something. It seems as though Mr.Flagler never got to "roam freely" or exit the building at all. For you see, the imprint of his face is still inside this tile to this very day. ... See more

Alfred sat on the empty trolley benches, remanacing on times when #TheAlcazarHotel was open. The second of Henry Flagler's hotels, this one was built for more than just fine dining and "hobnobbing" this was the adult entertainment hotel. Bowling alleys, billiards, a bicycle academy and even the world's largest indoor swimming pool. Alfred told me of a story he once heard while staying at the hotel. He said a little boy was swimming in the pool when tragedy struck. Something happened and the next thing everyone knew the little boy was underwater. Everyone rushed to save him, but couldn't make it to the boy in time and he drowned that day. To this day, the old swimming pool is still there, no water of course but you can have lunch in the restaurant located in the shallow end. High archways and Henry Flagler's signature opulent style surround you. Some people say they see something above them while dining there- not the hand carved details- no. They look up and catch a glimpse of a little boy swimming above them. The same little boy that tragically drowned while staying at The Alcazar Hotel. I'd say they got more than a great club sandwich at lunch that day. Part Two of The Alcazar Hotel coming soon! ... See more

Tuesday Edition of A Ghostly Encounters Haunted Happening from around the world and right here in St. Augustine Fl.
Did you know Alfred graduated from #FlaglerCollege? Many people say it is haunted by Mr.Flagler himself, as well as his second wife Ida Alice. Students and visitors are no longer allowed to go up to the fourth floor because it is "unstable" but students living in the girl's dormitory have a different tale to tell. After marrying his second wife, Ida Alice began dabbling in the "dark arts". She would smoke opium, which was legal then, and play with what was then called the "planchette"- today known as the ouija board. She thought that the Czar of Russia- we're talking the Romanoff's here- was coming to her through this ouija board telling her to kill her husband (a.k.a. Henry Flagler), and be with him in Russia. And believe it or not- she tried. Once with a letter opener and once with a knitting needle. She failed both attempts, but Mr.Flagler was understandably annoyed. With mental health being something of a "taboo" back then, he had his wife locked in the fourth floor of the Ponce de Leon Hotel, today Flagler College, and left her there twenty four hours a day, seven days a week. Out of the sight of his wealthy hotel guests. As you would imagine, Ida Alice went more insane than she already was- throwing furniture across the room, banging on the walls and playing the only form of entertainment she had up there: a grand piano. Mrs.Alice taught herself to play the piano; seemingly the only positive thing that came of the situation. To this day Flagler College students say they hear that furniture sliding across the floor on the fourth floor, or banging on the "ceilings" of their third floor dorm rooms. Ida Alice has also been known to play the piano for some of the students. One of our very own guides, Morganne, lived in the building for two years and one night after working a late night ghost tour was chatting on the phone outside her room. She began to hear very loud, very dramatic, and flawlessly played piano music from a grand piano. "It was so close I felt like I could reach out and touch it, but I couldn't figure out where it was coming from. It was the craziest thing! It wasn't long after that I learned of Ida Alice's talent for playing the piano. I know it was her, it had to be." More stories from #ThePoncedeLeonHotel and #FlaglerCollege coming soon! ... See more
Have you ever taken a stroll down the historic bayfront? Alfred decided it was time for him to get some sun, so he thought he'd give it a shot yesterday- thankfully he lived to tell his tale tonight. Disclaimer: once you know the true history of our bay you will not be able to "un-see" it! The historic "Bay of the Dancing Dolphins" as the Native Americans once called it is quite a spectacular place to take in the sunrise. Dolphins swimming peacefully through the water searching for bait fish to call breakfast. However, today we don't know it as "The Bay of the Dancing Dolphins". We know it as "Matanzas Bay". "Matanza" being a spanish word literally translating to "slaughter"- quite the opposite of majestic dolphins. So, what changed you ask? Read on to find out. Saint Augustine was founded by Pedro Menendez in September of 1565. Three years earlier, a Frenchman, Jean Ribault, settled about 30 miles north in what is today known as Jacksonville. The French built a fort there, Fort Caroline. When Pedro Menendez was sent to Saint Augustine to wipe out the French and claim this land for Spain, Jean Ribault was not amused. He came to Saint Augustine looking for a fight- low and behold they rolled up their sleeves, ready to fight- and a hurricane hits and shipwrecked all of Jean Ribault's ships. 🤷♀️ The storm blew their ships very far south and the French survivors began walking back up the coast of Florida, trying to get back to Jacksonville where their fort and supplies were. Pedro Menendez hears of their whereabouts and captures the remaining sixty survivors. He marches them out onto the dry oyster beds of "The Bay of the Dancing Dolphins" at low tide and gives them a choice. Either convert to Catholicism and pay homage to the King of Spain, or die. Perhaps it was because he was speaking spanish, and they were French, or perhaps it was a case of pride. None the less, no one chose to convert and he kept his promise. The men were beheaded and their bodies thrown into the bay. It is said the bay ran red with blood for three consecutive days before finally washing out to sea. To this day, because of this event, we call the bay "Matanzas Bay". It is one of the largest unmarked cemeteries in the city. Some of the boats anchored just off the seawall claim to see "soulless faces" drifting by. Dead body sightings, hearing a banging on the hull of your boat, these are all fairly normal occurrences in the bay. Hopefully Alfred hasn't ruined the way you see our beautiful bay, it is still the spot Alfred takes his hot dates for romantic walks, although they are all dead so maybe that doesn't help. ... Alfred stopped to take a stroll in the plaza tonight. A ghost town it may be-right now in these difficult times, and also in spirit. When the Spanish first arrived in 1565, they brought with them ideals and customs that they lived by. These same ideals and customs we still have today. These are things that are Spanish in design to the very core. For example, it could be said that the oldest "thing" in Saint Augustine is indeed the layout (sans "The Old Senator" of course). The Spanish traditionally had a centralized plaza, with the town branching off of that point. Located on this plaza they were to have three essential elements: a Catholic church, a Government building, and a town market. To this day, these facts remain in our very own #PlazadelaConstitution. Because the plaza was always the center of town, it was a hotbed for activities. Everything from festivals to holidays to public executions were held right here in the plaza. The Governor would stand on his balcony and watch the festivities- all of them. One particular execution was for a man named Andrew Ransom. He was a young pirate who had been caught in Saint Augustine and sentenced to death by garrote. Think of a garrote as a "horizontal hanging". The condemned is backed up against a board. This board has a hole around where your neck would be, and a loop would go around your head and through that hole. A post would be inserted into the back of that loop and they would begin to twist. Within around seven or eight twists your neck would break and subsequently, you would drown in your own blood. Charming isn't it? Why wouldn't they just hang a man, you ask? Because they would wait thirty minutes inbetween each twist; a way to "slow down" the hanging and prolong the torture. The rope was placed around the neck of Mr.Ransom. the executioner began to twist. First, second, then the third twist. By the fourth and fifth he could feel himself slipping in and out of consciousness. With the sixth and seventh final twist, he reaches into his pocket and began praying over a Catholic rosary. Within seconds, the rope breaks and Mr.Ransom falls to his knees, gasping for air. Six priests from the Catholic Cathedral Basilica are witness to this unbelievable phenomenon and they immediately take the boy into the protection of the church. It is there it is declared divine intervention- this man was not supposed to die on this day. The Governor makes him a deal, if Mr.Ransom will agree to use his masonry skills to help finish the #CastillodeSanMarcos, then he will be set free. Mr.Ransom agrees and goes on to actually marry the Governor's daughter of all people. Talk about revenge, huh? But apparently he has never left the spot where his life was given back to him- #ThePlazadelaConstitution. Many visitors say they see a confused, young pirate wandering around this area. Others say they feel a very distinct chill down their spine as if someone wants them to know they are not alone. Whatever the reason, Andrew Ransom still walks free. ... See more
Alfred decided he needed to get away. Fortunately, he's already dead and was able to swing by the #CasadeSuenos for a staycation. It was a beautiful building and the sign said "vacancy" so he figured it was his last chance before they closed for the month. Little did he know, he was getting more than he bargained for. "Casa de Suenos" or "House of Dreams" is not only a beautiful and accommodating bed and breakfast here in town, but it once used to be a funeral parlor. Many guests staying in the B&B report hearing what sounds like furniture sliding across the upstairs floors. Items will move in the middle of the night- some people even hear knocking on their door at the all exciting "bewitching hour", 3am. Are these some of the "customers" that happened to make their very last reservation at the House of Dreams? Perhaps you can make a reservation yourself and see if you can ask them for yourself 👻 Side note: APRIL FOOLS! Everyone knows Alfred is alive and well 😜 ... See more
Jim & Renee from A ghostly encounter bring you the haunts from around the world..
Alfred was feeling nostalgic so he decided to stop at an old Saint Augustine favorite, #ScarlettOharas. This local restaurant has been a staple in the community for many years. Built in 1861, this Florida cracker style house was a gift from a Mr.George Coolee for his then fiance'. Unfortunately, she left him before the home was even complete. A few weeks later the plot thickens- Mr.Coolee and his now ex-fiance's new lover (a soldier stationed at the Fort) get into a physical altercation. Just days later Mr.Coolee is found drowned in his bathtub in an upstairs bathroom. There are many questions to this story, George Coolee was over six feet tall, how could a man of his stature drown in a bathtub? Was he under the influence of something? Or did it have anything to do with his ex-fiance or her new soldier boyfriend? Regardless the circumstances, Mr.Coolee has never left the property. He is known to blow on your neck, change television stations, and alter the air conditioning setting. He particularly likes to tap on men's shoulders when there is no one else around. Mr.Coolee was a true southern gentleman, and like Catalina at Harry's, does not tolerate foul language. He makes it perfectly known that he disapproves by slamming doors, breaking glasses, whatever he thinks will get the point across. Alfred is planning an overnight paranormal investigation at this location soon...we will keep you updated! ... See more
Our Lead In
After watching our live broadcast of #AGhostlyEncounter last night, Alfred was inspired to do some paranormal investigation of his own. He thought a great place to start would be our very own #HarrysRestaurant on the bayfront, just a short walk south from the #CasablancaInn. The original building standing on this spot was built in 1750, and used as a private residence for a family with nine children. One of those children was Catalina. When the British took control of the city in 1763, many people still loyal to the Spanish crown in Saint Augustine fled the city and settled in Cuba. Catalina and her family were one of those families. However, Catalina never forgot about her childhood home and 21 years later, the return of the Spanish rule and with a new husband in tow, Catalina petitioned the city for her home and won! She had her beloved childhood home back. After fighting for her home for all those years, it seems she has never left at all. The upstairs ladies restroom today is actually the spot where her boudoir once occupied. It seems as though she is not very happy about this and is known to let the occupants of this area know about her disdain. She has been known to slam the stall doors in the bathroom, and move pieces of furniture from side to side. She was a true "Southern Belle" in the sense that "women should behave as women", meaning no inappropriate behavior and definitely no foul language. A woman once claimed while eating at Harry's she went into the restroom for a private conversation on her cell phone, minutes later she ran out of the room- her cell phone left spinning on the floor. When the manager asked what had transpired she lifted her hand from her cheek, revealing a tiny red handprint as if she had been slapped across the face. It seems as though that woman was not using appropriate language and Catalina did not approve. The woman never returned to the restroom. Alfred piped up "some women have been so startled it is rumored they have actually come running out of the ladies restroom with their pants around their ankles!". "What does that mean?" I replied. "It means this is the only place in town you can find a line of men outside the women's restroom" said Alfred. #hesgotjokes ... See more
